If you’re like me, 2020 made your itch to travel insatiable. Maybe it’s the whole, we-want-what-we-can’t-have kinda thing, I don’t know. But what I do know, is that this year, all I’ve wanted to do is GO!
But it’s not without reservation, right? The question on whether or not to get vaccinated (in my opinion there was no question, but I realize it’s a concern), do masks work?, what are airline policies?, will I be safe flying?…. The list of worries can seem endless and trying to go somewhere can be daunting.
So, I’ve put together a little guide for how to travel while COVID is still a concern. This will help to tame that travel bug while alleviating some of the anxieties of big travel right now.
This guide is also a way to keep travel costs at a minimum if your travel budget is running a little on the slimmer side.
(*Please note, these are some of the things I do to feel more secure traveling. Legally, I must tell you to consult local and federal resources when traveling and remind you that this post and these suggestions are purely my opinions. 1. Stay local or drive to your destination to avoid flights
We always want to travel to some far-off destination, but there’s no need to book a flight. Chances are there is a location within driving distance that you’ve always wanted to check out but never made the time to.
NOW is the time! Go to the cute B&B you’ve heard about. Is there a museum or other cultural venue that you’ve always been curious to see? Make it a day trip.
If you’re averse to being on a cramped flight, don’t let that hold you back from making your own way and checking out something close by!
2. Keep it outdoors, remember social distancing
Literally, every state has some sort of state park. Often, these parks are the unsung gems of your area! Do a little research and see if there is a nice state park you can check out. Make it a day trip or go camping!
If you’re lucky enough to live near or within driving distance to a national park, plan. a. trip! These national wonders never get old and never fail to revive the senses when you’re feeling the need to explore.
Just remember, even outdoors, try to be mindful of social distancing. Places like parks and beaches can still get pretty crowded this time of year, so maybe pick a less popular tourist destination in order to avoid the crowds.
3. Farmer’s Markets & Festivals
It’s summer right now, and the world of farmer’s markets and arts & crafts festivals is in full swing!
Again, do some research and see what options are nearby. Always keep social distancing in mind.
There’s nothing better than local produce, honey, baked goods, cheeses….the list goes on and on! And you never know what unique treasures you’ll find made by local artists! Not only will you fill that itch to go, and see, and explore, but you’ll also be doing some good for the local economy!
4. Try a New Restaurant
For me, probably 90% of traveling is about the food! Maybe you don’t have the time or funds to plan a big trip. Maybe the pandemic has you wary about big travels.
Think about a restaurant that you’ve always wanted to try that is within driving distance. Maybe it’s a cultural experience or maybe it’s not in your normal budget for eating out.
Pick something that is special or that you wouldn’t just randomly go try and make plans to go.
I live near Atlanta, and my husband and I try to pick a new restaurant to try once every 4 to 6 weeks. This gives us something to break up the monotony of work and also a little something to look forward to. This is my go-to hack for stifling my travel bug between trips.
Also, consider making reservations during off-hours instead of at prime dinner time. This is another way to help you avoid large crowds.
I hope these travel hacks will help get you back out and exploring!
Mask up, get vaccinated, and stay safe, friends!
